Natural Horn Workshop with Richard Seraphinoff from June 11 to June 16, 2007

in Clouse's Lounge, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University in Bloomington, U.S.

This workshop is open to professionals, students, teachers, and advanced amateurs interested in the natural horn.  The schedule will include a daily master class, an ensemble session, and a lecture.  Each student will receive two private lessons during the week.  An informal concert will conclude the workshop.  For participants who do not own an instrument, a limited number of horns will be available.

L'Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes (France) from 27 to 31 October, 2007 - Discovery Course : Initiation to interpretation on period instruments

   

Objectives: This five-day course offers an introduction to playing on period instruments and gives an overview of the stylistic particularities of historical performance. The rehearsals are interspersed with lectures on stringed instruments, musical edition and stylistic elements…


Course Eligibility: The course is suitable for many participants, ranging from professional musicians such as teachers at music-college to contemporary instrument musicians who have had little or no experience playing on historical instruments. Applications from amateur musicians at a minimum level of grade 8, will also be considered.


Course Sructure:

Musicians will work in wind and string instrumental groups. A Sinfonia Concertante will be studied if instrumental forces allow.


  • Strings

A Classical programme will give students their first opportunity to play on gut strings with authentic bows.

Instruments eligible: violin, viola, 'cello, double bass.

  • Winds

A programme of music for large and small wind ensembles will give an overview of the technical and musical aspects of historical performance.

Instruments eligible: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn.


A public performance of works studied is given at the end of the week.


Instructors:

The tutors are musicians from the Orchestre des Champs Elysées and other ensembles which specialise in this repertoire on period instruments. Their names have to be confirmed. Claude Maury, horn


Instruments:

Period instruments are loaned to students by the Abbaye aux Dames.  Wind instruments such as flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons are available ; as are bows for the string players. Gut strings will be available for students to purchase.


Fees:

300 €. This fee includes tuition, room and board.

+ 13 € / year of mandatory membership in the Abbaye aux Dames de Saintes.
