Renée Allen

Renée Allen studied horn at McGill University, played in the Québec Symphony Orchestra which she left 25 years ago with the idea of studying natural horn one year with Hermann Baumann before returning to her native Canada.  It went decidedly wrong as she won an audition and then spent 7 years playing in German opera orchestras.  She finally left the standard scene to devote herself to the natural horn and the F.M. Alexander Technique of which she has been a teacher since 1993.  She plays regularly with Concerto Köln, and has made many fun recordings with Uli Hübner and Mike Roberts.  Of note is the Heinichen double horn concerti recording with Charlie Putnam and Musica Antiqua Köln.  She is among “those who insist on combining  the high and low ranges in a compass beyond human capacity” (Dauprat, p. 9) and hopes to avoid death or infirmity in doing so.  She currently plays up and down with ensembles such as Anima Eterna, Concerto Copenhagen, Hannoversche Hofkapelle, Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, La Petite Bande, and Opéra Fuoco.  The Alexander Technique continues to play an important role in her teaching and performing and she recently gave a weeklong course for AT and Musicians in Saintes, which will be repeated next year.  She could not haven managed any of the above without chocolate.
