Andrew Joy

Andrew Joy was born 1952 in Perth, Australia.  He began his career self-taught and later studied with Campbell Barnes in Australia and Erich Penzel in Cologne.  Indelible impressions from the hornists Barry Tuckwell, Dale Clevenger and Hermann Baumann as well as the invaluable influence of cellist/conductor Johannes Goritzki, formed the character of his playing.  After gaining early professional experience in Australia, Joy moved to Cologne, Germany in 1976.  In the same year he was appointed 1st Horn in Bonn in the ’’Beethovenhalle Orchester’’.  Two years later he joined the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra as principal horn and has since recorded most of Mahler’s symphonic oeuvre under Gary Bertini (EMI).  Numerous solo recordings with Nikolaus Harnoncourt und Reinhard Goebel (Musica Antiqua Cologne) testify to his mastery of the technically challenging historical instruments. Contemporary music is of primary importance to Andrew Joy as his first solo CD (Cappricio CD 10 443), with works from Pflüger, Schoeck, and Strauss, amply illustrates.  In March 1998 under the direction of Johannes Goritzki, together with the Tenor Andreas Weller, Joy premiered a new work from Hans Georg Pflüger:  ...icy is the world outside...  1997 after Birger Sellin for Tenor, Horn, Percussion and Strings.  He has recorded the „Konzertstück“ from Robert Schumann together with his colleagues in the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra both under Gary Bertini for radio and Hans Vonk for CD (EMI).  Andrew Joys second solo CD (together with the Cologne Radio Orchestra conducted by Johannes Goritzki) containing works by Haydn, Rosetti, Punto, Cherubini and Danzi was released by Capriccio in the Autumn of 1998.
